Fernando Pernas

Author / Clarinetist

Born in Veiros/Estremoz, he began his contact with music at the “Sociedade Filarmónica Humanitária” in Palmela. He furthered his musical studies at the Luísa Todi Academy of Music and Fine Arts with Professor José Eduardo Ferreira and at the Setúbal Regional Conservatory with Professors Sérgio Oliveira and Manuel Jerónimo, and completed his clarinet training at the Lisbon Higher School of Music in the class of Professor Manuel Jerónimo. He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Palmela City Council. In 1995, he was a finalist in the “Juventude musical Portuguesa” competition and, in the same year, won the 3rd national music competition “Carpe Diem”. He was a teacher at the Setúbal and Palmela Music Conservatories and at the Music School of the “Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense”. He collaborated with several national orchestras and with the theatre company “O Bando”. He has been devoted to several composers and has had the opportunity to study with important national and international clarinetists. He has premiered works by national and international composers, including Christopher Bochmann; Fernando Lobo, Gonçalo Lourenço, Vitor Rua, Jorge Salgueiro, José Azevedo de Sousa, among others. He is a founding member of the “Clarinetes de Santiago”, is a member, with guitarist José Micael, of the chamber music group “Duo Encore” and has been a clarinetist in the GNR Symphonic Band since 1996. He has been very interested in watchmaking since he was a child and is currently a student at the Portuguese Institute of Watchmaking.
