Engrenagens do Tempo: The Art of Mechanical Horology

The new exhibition at the Galeria de Exposições do Palácio da Cidadela de Cascais displays different types of Portuguese and European clocks and watches made between the 17th and 19th centuries, the golden age of mechanical horology.

It is organised by the Câmara Municipal de Cascais and the Fundação D. Luís I, as part of the Bairro dos Museus programme. Curated by José António Proença, museum curator. From 27 May to 10 September 2023, the Galeria de Exposições do Palácio da Cidadela presents Engrenagens do Tempo: A Arte da Relojoaria Mecânica, an exhibition of timepieces made in Portugal and elsewhere in Europe - notably in countries such as France, England, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium – with all the ingenuity, refinement and ostentation of the art of mechanical horology.

This is an exhibition that began to be planned before the pandemic and required an enormous amount of coordination between different bodies, each working at its own pace, as well as between private collectors. Anyone who visits the Palácio da Cidadela de Cascais will be able to see very rare timepieces of incalculable value. The pieces on display all have great historical significance, and it is even possible to see some original Breguet timepieces. This is a rare opportunity that we applaud, and we hope it will be the first of many.
