Madrid: IPR Watchmaking Course



The fascinating world of watchmaking is taking on a special focus with the Watchmaking Course at the Ateneu de Madrid , which will begin on January 11, 2025. This 12-month course is a unique opportunity to delve into the secrets of creating, maintaining and designing mechanical and electronic watches. Under the guidance of Master Watchmaker António Roca , participants will have access to comprehensive training, combining theory and practice, and culminating in the issuance of a certificate of participation by the Portuguese Institute of Watchmaking (IPR) .

The course has been designed with people of all backgrounds and levels of knowledge in mind. No prior training or advanced knowledge of watchmaking is required. The most important thing is interest and a willingness to learn. To facilitate learning, each participant will receive a kit containing professional tools carefully selected by the trainers at the beginning of the course.



A Flexible and Affordable Course


With schedules compatible with family and professional life, classes will be held every two weeks on Saturdays, from 10 am to 5:30 pm, at the historic Ateneu de Madrid . The lunch break, from 1 pm to 2:30 pm, provides a moment of socializing among participants.


The total course load is 144 hours, distributed across 24 theoretical sessions of six hours each. This structure allows for progressive and solid development, covering everything from fundamental concepts to advanced watchmaking techniques.



A Comprehensive Training


The course program is divided into theoretical and practical components, ensuring that participants not only understand how watches work, but also master the tools and techniques needed to work with different types of mechanisms. Practical topics include the maintenance of wristwatches , table watches and quartz watches , as well as the construction of some watchmaking tools .


On the other hand, the theoretical aspect explores topics such as the history of time measurement , materials technology , the functional analysis of mechanical and quartz watches and even the design of watches for personal use .

The course is aimed at young people and adults, with or without previous experience, who wish to acquire knowledge about watchmaking. It is ideal for both collectors and enthusiasts as well as those looking for a new skill or career.
