Profile: Jean-Marc Wiederrecht | Agenhor

Jean-Marc Wiederrecht is one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world and the founder of the Agenhor manufacture in Geneva. He is renowned for his ability to turn any idea, however technically complex, into reality in the field of watchmaking. He has worked with renowned houses such as Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, Hermès and Fabergé, for which he has created iconic watches that have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.

Jean-Marc Wiederrecht obtained his watchmaking diploma in 1972 and soon started his own business. In 1989 he invented a bi-retrograde perpetual calendar for Harry Winston, a genuine technical breakthrough. This success was the prelude to many innovations in watchmaking.

In 1996 Jean-Marc Wiederrecht and his wife Catherine founded their company, Agenhor, which went on to register several important patents and to work with the most famous watch companies. From then on, numerous awards continued to honour Agenhor and its historic founder.

According to Jean-Marc, Agenhor’s purpose is to create “watches with poetic complications”, because they “embody advanced watchmaking techniques with the aim of stopping time.”

Since 2017 Agenhor has been run by Nicolas and Laurent Wiederrecht, the founders’ sons, who uphold the same vision: handcraftsmanship, the cabinotier spirit and excellence in watch complications.

Career

His passion for watchmaking began in his youth, when he visited a small workshop in his village and immediately realised that he wanted to be a watchmaker. This early decision was supported by a solid family foundation: his wife Catherine and his two sons, Nicolas and Laurent, are an integral part of the business. Jean-Marc stands out for his humility and his enthusiasm for life and for his craft, which only grows with the passing years.

Jean-Marc often mentions that one of the most widespread myths in the watch world is the belief that only marketing can recognise customers’ expectations and that grandiose descriptions of ordinary products can drive sales. He believes, however, that the true essence of success lies in creating products of great technical complexity and quality of finishing.

The most challenging part of his work is finding and selecting ideas that make it possible to produce outstanding and reliable products that meet the needs of the brands he works with. Nevertheless, he points out that criticising the bureaucratic failings of some houses is easy, but he does so with conviction, in the hope of restoring the magic of watchmaking.

For Jean-Marc, the most important things in life are independence, family, creation, the contemplation of nature, his employees and respect for others and for nature. He believes that anything in life can be a source of inspiration, from nature to past experiences and conversations with clients.

Jean-Marc values harmony, seeing it as a goal to be achieved in everyday life and in every product he creates. He says that, despite life’s ups and downs, harmony brings unrivalled satisfaction. From his parents he learned respect for others, especially for the weakest, a love of nature and of simple things, humility and an interest in his fellow human beings. He has no particular motto, but Horace’s “Carpe Diem” suits his philosophy well. To relax, he enjoys outdoor activities, gardening, walks in nature and reading.

Jean-Marc Wiederrecht is an example of how passion, talent and a solid family foundation can lead to success and personal fulfilment. His story inspires us to follow our dreams with humility, hard work and faith in our abilities.
