Guilloche

Guilloché is an artisanal bas-relief engraving technique that creates complex decorative patterns and is widely used in fine watchmaking to add depth and exclusivity to watches.

Introduced in the 18th century by masters such as Abraham-Louis Breguet, the technique requires specialized lathes and great manual skill, and is valued by the most prestigious watchmaking brands. Despite almost disappearing with industrialization and the quartz crisis, guilloché resurfaced in the 1980s, driven by watchmakers such as George Daniels and Kari Voutilainen, once again becoming a symbol of art and authenticity in watchmaking.

Today, the technique is performed by hand, but also using modern methods such as CNC, stamping and laser, each with its own advantages and limitations. Contemporary masters such as Kari Voutilainen keep this tradition alive by using guilloche as an expression of technical and aesthetic skill.

Kari Voutilainen: Mastery in Watchmaking and the Art of Guilloché

In the recent history of fine watchmaking, few names have resonated with as much prestige and admiration as that of Kari Voutilainen. This Finnish master watchmaker not only redefined the standards of excellence, but also preserved and celebrated artisanal techniques that date back centuries, such as hand guilloché.

The Path of Kari Voutilainen

Kari Voutilainen is recognised as one of the greatest master watchmakers of our time, his name itself a brand, greater than the man himself. Standing out among his peers, Voutilainen combines extraordinary craftsmanship with a strategic business vision, repeatedly demonstrating his ability to build and maintain a sustainable manufacturing business. Whether through his collaborations or by integrating his own case and dial manufacturers, Kari consistently and successfully exemplifies the value of thinking long-term. His career path began in watch restoration, an experience that inevitably led him to create his own works.

Masterpieces by Kari Voutilainen

Among the most emblematic pieces of the Voutilainen collection are:

  • Tourbillon 6 : This watch stands out for its large tourbillon, which takes up almost half of the movement.

  • Vingt-8 : Equipped with a movement developed entirely in-house , it features beautiful guilloché dials.

  • Masterpiece 7 Decimal : A watch with decimal repeater and second time zone indication, based on a LeCoultre ébauche that is over 100 years old.

Each creation reflects Kari Voutilainen's philosophy: a perfect union between functionality and art.
